The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dec. 19 thanked U.S. President Donald J. Trump for signing into law the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2026 that includes multiple provisions supportive of Taiwan.

According to the MOFA, the legislation incorporates provisions that aim to enhance Taiwan’s defense capabilities and resilience, expanding bilateral maritime patrol and security cooperation, and supporting global participation.

These articles provide the legal foundation, policy tools and resources for enhancing bilateral cooperation and exchanges across multiple areas to jointly promote regional peace and stability, the ministry added.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung sincerely welcomed the development, and thanked the U.S. Capitol for the continued and unwavering cross-party support for legislation advancing U.S.-Taiwan security cooperation.

In line with national policy, the MOFA will remain in close contact with both the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. to ensure smooth implementation of Taiwan-related legislation and deepen the friendly partnership to safeguard peace, prosperity and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added.

The Ministry of National Defense also issued a statement the same day to thank the U.S. government for passing the legislation. Based on the enemy threat and defense operations, the MND said it will maintain exchanges with Washington through existing mechanisms to enhance Taiwan’s combat readiness so as to ensure peace across the Taiwan Strait and in the region.
